Getting Around Venice: the Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most famous bridges of Venice, known by all as the Bridge of lovers, it was built around the beginning of 1600 in white Istrian stone; its shapes follow the baroque lines and its sculptural decorations of inimitable beauty, remain etched in the mind of those who see it.

Despite the romantic name, it is said that the name has a connotation that is anything but romantic. The “Sights” were, in fact, those of the condemned and of the prisoners who, from the Justice room, walked the two corridors of the bridge, until they reached the prison, from which, more often than not, they did not go out for the rest of their lives . The vision of the blue sky, the light breeze and the sunlight that filtered through the windows of the structure gave them a last feeling of freedom. This sad legend, today leaves room for a lighter and more romantic vision: the view of the lagoon at sunset, a gondola ride and an affectionate kiss exchanged passing under the bridge, will bring eternal love and happiness to the couple of lovers.
