Getting Around Venice: the Basilica dei Frari

The Basilica dei Frari is one of the most largest church of Venice and undisputed destination for those who love the gothic architecture and art: it is the richest in terms of art pieces, second only to the Basilica di San Marco.

The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is commonly known as the Basilica dei Frari. It is located in the Campo dei Frari of the same name in the sestiere (district) di San Paolo, where in the XIII Century the Franciscan order of the Minor Friars reclaimed the marshland and built the first church of Venice dedicated to Virgin Mary. They had to build the church three times in order to host the great number of believers during the Masses.

The Basilica dei Frari is a simple building with essential lines, but it also has a splendid gothic decoration with a Byzantine mark. The 17 altars conserve many pieces of different artist like Tiziano. The church also hosts different funeral memorials dedicated to important personalities of Venice: Tiziano, Antonio Canova and different doges. But you can find the heart of the basilica in the middle of the central nave in front of the plebiscite: the Coro dei Frari, the greatest choir preserved in Italy.
